Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri’s upcoming film The Bengal Files has landed in controversy even before its worldwide release on September 5, 2025. Despite no official ban, the movie is reportedly facing an “unofficial blockade” in West Bengal, where theatre owners are allegedly receiving threats to stop its screening.
In a desperate move, Agnihotri has written an emotional letter to President Droupadi Murmu, urging her to intervene and ensure the film’s release in the state.
Why Is ‘The Bengal Files’ Facing Opposition?
Agnihotri, known for making films that spark heated debates, revealed that political pressure has led to theatre owners in Bengal withdrawing support. He claimed that even the planned trailer launch in Kolkata was canceled after owners backed out due to fear of backlash.
The director said the film sheds light on sensitive historical events like the Direct Action Day and the Noakhali Hindu genocide, making it the final part of his much-discussed trilogy.
The Letter to President Murmu
Sharing his letter on social media, Agnihotri wrote:
“Droupadi Murmu ji… with a heavy heart, I write to you not for favor, but for protection. The Bengal Files is the concluding chapter of our trilogy, and it exposes forgotten truths of India’s partition.”
He alleged that West Bengal Chief Minister mocked the film, multiple FIRs were filed against him, and his family has been receiving threats. According to Agnihotri, theatre owners are now being pressured to cancel screenings, leaving him with no option but to seek help from the President.
Concluding his appeal, he wrote:
“You are our last hope. Please help us release The Bengal Files in West Bengal.”
