As devastating floods continue to wreak havoc across Punjab, displacing hundreds of thousands and causing widespread damage, a coalition of prominent Punjabi celebrities is stepping up to lead substantial relief and rehabilitation efforts.
Singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh, through his team @teamdiljitglobal, has announced the adoption of ten of the worst-hit villages in the Gurdaspur and Amritsar districts. Working in coordination with NGOs and local authorities, the initiative is focused on providing immediate essentials like food, water, and medical aid, with a long-term commitment to reconstruction. “Together, we can rebuild,” a post on his official Instagram channel stated.
A Unified Front from the Entertainment Industry
Dosanjh is not alone in his mission. The entertainment industry has united to offer support:
- Sonam Bajwa took to Instagram, calling the images from Punjab “truly heartbreaking.” She has pledged donations to on-ground organizations and urged her followers to contribute, emphasizing that “every contribution, no matter how small, can make a difference.”
- Ammy Virk announced a targeted plan to adopt 200 homes for affected families. In an emotional statement, Virk said, “This is not just about shelter—it’s about giving hope, dignity, and strength to start again.”
- Himanshi Khurana pledged to help resettle 10 families, calling for all celebrities, leaders, and the public to unite in finding solutions.
- Sanjay Dutt expressed his support on X (formerly Twitter), calling the devastation “heartbreaking” and promising to “support in every way I can.”
The Scale of the Disaster
The humanitarian crisis is severe. According to Punjab Revenue, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Minister S. Hardeep Singh Mundian, the floods have impacted over 256,000 people across 12 districts. Official figures report:
- 15,688 people evacuated to safety.
- 129 relief camps established, currently sheltering 7,144 people.
- The districts of Gurdaspur, Ferozepur, and Fazilka are among the most critically affected.
In response to the ongoing crisis, the Punjab government has ordered the closure of all 43 centres associated with the Punjab Skill Development Mission (PSDM) until September 3.
The combined efforts of government agencies and private citizens highlight a critical push towards recovery and rebuilding for the people of Punjab.
