Actor-comedian Vir Das has welcomed the Supreme Court of India’s revised order on stray dogs, which ensures their safe return to neighborhoods after sterilisation and vaccination, except in cases of rabies infection or aggressive behaviour.

On Friday, Das took to his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express gratitude, highlighting the importance of vaccination, sterilisation, and community integration of stray dogs.

Vir Das Urges Municipalities for Swift Action

The comedian urged local authorities to take quick action in creating dedicated feeding areas for community dogs. He further suggested collaboration with dog trainers and behaviourists for behavioural modification programs, ensuring smoother coexistence between dogs and local communities.

“It is nice to know our voiceless dogs can rely on your empathy and balance,” Das wrote while thanking the Supreme Court for its empathetic approach.

Supreme Court’s Revised Order Explained

The Supreme Court, in its August 22 ruling, revised the earlier August 11 order and clarified that:

  • Stray dogs must be released back into the same locality after sterilisation and immunisation.
  • Dogs infected with rabies or aggressive tendencies will be kept separately.
  • No public feeding will be allowed, but dedicated feeding spaces must be created by municipalities.
  • Animal lovers can apply to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) or other local bodies for adoption.

This decision aims to balance public safety and animal welfare, while addressing the growing stray dog concerns in urban areas.
