In a surprising and candid revelation, actor Shruti Haasan has disclosed the deeply personal reason behind her father, legendary actor Kamal Haasan’s, fluency in the Bengali language. Contrary to popular belief, it was not for a film role, but for love.
The disclosure was made during a promotional interview for the recent blockbuster film ‘Kuli,’ starring Rajinikanth, where Shruti Haasan shared the screen with actor Satyaraj.
The Secret Behind the Language
The conversation turned to Kamal Haasan’s famed multilingual prowess, which includes Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, and English. When Satyaraj mentioned that Kamal had learned Bengali for a film, Shruti Haasan interjected with the true story.
“You know why he actually learned Bengali?” Shruti stated on the ‘Kuli Candid’ YouTube show. “It was because he had fallen in love with Aparna Sen at that time. So, to impress her, he learned Bengali. He didn’t learn it for films.”
A Hidden Homage in ‘Hey Ram’
Shruti Haasan further connected this revelation to one of her father’s most acclaimed films, the 2000 historical drama ‘Hey Ram,’ which he wrote and directed. She pointed out that the character played by Rani Mukerji in the film was named Aparna, a direct homage to the renowned Bengali actress and filmmaker.
This insight provides a new layer of context for fans and film historians, linking a personal chapter of Kamal Haasan’s life to his celebrated cinematic work.
The Success of ‘Kuli’
The revelation came during promotions for the film ‘Kuli,’ which was released on August 14th. The movie, featuring a cameo by Aamir Khan, has been a major box office success, reportedly earning over ₹263 crore net in India within just 13 days of its release. Shruti Haasan plays the role of Preeti Rajasekhar in the project.
