Ram Kapoor, a well-loved figure in Indian television, has recently landed in controversy. The actor, known for his memorable roles in Kasamh Se and Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, found himself at the centre of criticism after making inappropriate remarks at a promotional event in Mumbai. The occasion was meant to introduce his upcoming web series Mistry, but things took an uncomfortable turn.
Reports surfaced claiming that Ram’s comments during the event upset several people in attendance. The backlash was swift, and soon, the management team at JioHotstar took a firm stand. They decided to distance Ram Kapoor from the promotional activities of the series.
After days of silence, Ram Kapoor finally addressed the issue. In a conversation with ETimes TV, the actor did not shy away from accepting responsibility. “Let me start by saying that everything I’ve been accused of saying, I have said it. So, the fact is that I am guilty as charged. But this is what I have to say in my defence,” he stated.
Ram explained that his behaviour at the event was influenced by the informal environment. “Whenever I’m with people I am comfortable with, I tend to become my bindass self. Everyone who knows me and who has worked with me knows that is how I am and that I don’t mean to be offensive,” he added.
He acknowledged that what he considered harmless banter might not have landed well with others. The actor admitted he failed to sense the discomfort in the room and insisted that if he had known, he would have handled the situation differently. In particular, he addressed a remark he made about a girl’s outfit, which drew sharp reactions. Ram explained that it was never meant to be derogatory. “If I felt it was inappropriate, why would I say it openly in a hall full of media people? My character has been questioned for the first time in 25 years, so do acknowledge my justification,” he pleaded.
The actor shared that the younger members of the production team took offence to his remarks, and while his intentions were never harmful, he respects their right to speak up. He stressed the importance of being mindful in mixed company and agreed that the times demand better awareness. Ram assured that he would reach out personally to those affected and make amends. He expressed his regret over causing discomfort, adding that his words, though said in jest, had unintended consequences.
He admitted the incident shook him and taught him a valuable lesson about the evolving boundaries of acceptable humour in public spaces.
The controversy around Mistry has undoubtedly cast a shadow over the web series’ release. However, Ram’s decision to own up to his mistake and publicly address the issue has been noted.
