Shilpa Shirodkar’s journey into Bollywood was not a smooth ride. Known for films like Aankhen and Bhrastachaar, her early years were filled with rejection, self-doubt, and harsh media judgments. In a recent conversation with Pinkvilla, the actress opened up about how the industry initially failed her, but destiny gave her a second chance, thanks to Mithun Chakraborty.
Shilpa recalled how her dreams almost ended before they began. She was tagged as unlucky and jinxed because none of her first few projects took off. Media outlets speculated that her career was doomed even before she got a proper break. It wasn’t just frustrating, it was heartbreaking. Her association with Boney Kapoor’s project didn’t work out, and the press quickly concluded she wasn’t meant for the silver screen.
She remembered how Rikku Rakesh Nath, who managed Madhuri Dixit, played a pivotal role during this phase. He believed in her potential and decided to approach Mithun Chakraborty with her portfolio. Shilpa shared, “Rikku ji took my album and went to Dada. And he said, Ek ladki hai Dada…mujhe aisa lagta hai wo bahut talented hai lekin koi film materialise nhi ho rahi uske liye, abhi to log aise bhi likhne lage hain…to aap usko ek opportunity doge.”
She said Mithun didn’t hesitate. He decided to give her a break without overthinking it. News started circulating that Mithun Chakraborty would launch her, and that itself changed everything. She said he backed her with full trust and gave her a proper launch.
Shilpa was introduced through a Bengali film. The film was launched in Calcutta in an elaborate ceremony, which she fondly remembered. It wasn’t just any announcement, it was a full-fledged muhurat event in a theatre, something rare and grand. That day gave her the confidence she had lost.
The story didn’t end there. Mithun later recommended her to filmmaker Ramesh Sippy. That recommendation turned out to be the biggest turning point. She landed her first Hindi film, Bhrastachaar, in 1989, and it marked the beginning of her journey in mainstream cinema.
She made it very clear that all the credit for her career goes to Mithun. “So I have to say that I got this opportunity because of Dada (Mithun) and I am here because of him,” she emphasized.
Working with Mithun was both exciting and nerve-wracking for her. She remembered being extremely nervous on sets, especially while shooting their early scenes together. He was already a superstar and she was just starting out. Every day, she would reach the set early, prepare for her shots, and get ready before Mithun arrived for their joint scenes. The pressure to perform perfectly often overwhelmed her.
She admitted that she tried her best to deliver her scenes without asking for retakes because she didn’t want to appear unprofessional in front of someone she admired so deeply. “He was a senior to me and during shooting, I would reach the set in the morning and I would start preparing and giving my solo shots, and Dada would come in the afternoon for the combination shots,” she said.
Over the years, Shilpa and Mithun worked in several films together. From Bhrastachaar to Swarg Yahan Narak Yahan, Trinetra, Jeevan Ki Shatranj, and Hitler, their onscreen chemistry became a familiar sight in the ’90s.
Today, as she reflects on her beginnings, Shilpa Shirodkar’s story is one of second chances, resilience, and gratitude. Her career may have started on shaky ground, but with one person’s belief in her talent, she was able to rewrite her path in the film industry.
