Television’s golden couple, Gurmeet Choudhary and Debina Bonnerjee, are back on screen together and this time, they’re bringing not just their chemistry, but also their candid love story to the spotlight. The duo, who now appear on Colors TV’s reality show Pati, Patni Aur Panga, opened up in a heartwarming, drama-filled interview about their near-filmy marriage, the secret that lasted almost two decades, and their latest role as parents.
Secret Marriage at 19
While fans have long believed Gurmeet and Debina tied the knot in 2011, the couple recently dropped a bombshell, they actually got married way back in 2006, in complete secrecy.
“In 2006, when we were just 19, we secretly got married. Next year, it’ll be our 20th anniversary,” Gurmeet shared, casually rewriting their Wikipedia timelines and the internet’s collective memory. He added, “We almost eloped. I’m very filmy like that.” Cue collective gasps from fans and aunties everywhere.
Debina backed him up with a smile: “We were just 19-20 when we took that leap of faith… and thankfully, we landed.”
But before you get ideas, Gurmeet was quick to warn: “We don’t recommend it! We were lucky. Many people have tried doing this after hearing our story… and it didn’t end well.”
Contrary to popular belief, the two didn’t fall for each other on the sets of Ramayan. Debina clarified, “We fell in love before working together. That’s why when we finally did work together, it was fabulous.”
Their chemistry was already locked and loaded before the cameras rolled. The actress explained that since their foundation was built on friendship and support, the transition into married life and eventually parenthood felt natural. “We already knew how to be each other’s support system,” she said.
Their love didn’t rely on shared screen time. “Even when we weren’t working together, the connection stayed strong,” she added which, let’s be honest, is pretty rare in the TV world.
Struggles, Bills & Role Reversals
Gurmeet didn’t shy away from admitting the rocky beginnings of their marriage especially when he was struggling for work and Debina was the one paying the bills.
“I’d feel weird when the waiter brought the bill to me, knowing she was the one earning,” he said. “She was doing projects, and I was still figuring things out.”
Instead of letting ego get in the way, Gurmeet turned that into motivation. “I respected her even more. I worked harder because I knew I had to match up to her strength,” he said, crediting Debina for being the backbone of his success.
Debina chimed in with poetic clarity, “God was our parachute. Not everyone has that.”
From Soulmates to Super Parents
Fast forward to the present, the couple is now parenting pros to their two adorable daughters, Lianna and Divisha. Parenthood, they say, has upgraded them in ways they never imagined.
“I’m a 10.0 version of myself,” Debina said with pride, while Gurmeet, clearly in awe, added, “I have so much respect for her now I can touch her feet and even that won’t be enough!”
From balancing shoots to sleepless nights, the duo is now managing love, life, and lullabies and still looking like they walked out of a TV fairytale.
