In a major move to regulate digital content, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has banned 24 OTT apps and websites accused of streaming vulgar, obscene, and soft adult content. The list includes platforms like Ullu TV, Boomex, Desiflix, Navarasa Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Jalva App, ShowHit, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Feneo, ShowX, Sol Talkies, and notably, ALTT, formerly known as ALT Balaji.
These platforms were allegedly distributing material that violated content norms set by the government. The ban aims to clean up digital streaming services and prevent the easy availability of explicit content to the public, particularly the youth.
Spotlight on ALTT and Ekta Kapoor’s Alleged Losses
Among the banned apps, ALTT quickly became the most talked-about. The app, known for producing bold web series, had once enjoyed considerable popularity. It was initially launched as ALT Balaji in 2017 by Balaji Telefilms and later rebranded as ALTT.
Reports began circulating that ALTT’s ban had led to a staggering loss of ₹900 crore. Given the app’s association with renowned producer Ekta Kapoor, speculation intensified. Balaji Telefilms Ltd., which was believed to own ALT Digital Media Entertainment valued at ₹1209 crore, found itself under scrutiny.
However, Ekta Kapoor broke her silence and addressed the matter head-on.
Ekta Kapoor Issues Official Statement
Taking to Instagram, Ekta Kapoor shared a formal note to clarify her stance and current relationship with the banned platform. The post was captioned, “To whomsoever it may concern.”
The statement, issued on behalf of Balaji Telefilms, explained that the company is listed on the BSE and NSE and is managed professionally. It mentioned that ALT Digital Media Entertainment Ltd., earlier a wholly owned subsidiary, was officially merged with Balaji Telefilms following approval from the Hon’ble NCLT. The integration became effective from June 20, 2025.
“Contrary to such reports, Ms. Ekta Kapoor and Mrs. Shobha Kapoor are not associated in any capacity whatsoever with ALTT and they had stepped down from their association with ALTT way back in June 2021.”
The statement emphasized that the media must report responsibly and not imply otherwise. It concluded by asserting that “Balaji Telefilms Limited is fully compliant of all applicable laws and continues to operate its business with the highest standards of corporate governance.”
This clarification has put to rest speculations about Ekta and Shobha Kapoor’s direct involvement in the functioning of ALTT post-2021.
The government’s decision to ban apps streaming inappropriate content sends a strong message to digital platforms. With increasing public scrutiny and tighter regulation, OTT services will now be required to maintain higher content standards. For creators like Ekta Kapoor, the shift may signal a return to meaningful narratives and wider appeal, without crossing the line of decency.
