Popular Assamese singer and superstar Zubeen Garg, who tragically drowned in Singapore last Friday, will undergo a second autopsy in Guwahati. The decision was confirmed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday, following widespread demands from the public.
The Singapore government’s medical report initially listed the cause of death as drowning, after Garg was found submerged while swimming without a life jacket. However, growing suspicions and allegations of irregularities surrounding his death prompted calls for a fresh postmortem.
Final Rites to Be Held Near Guwahati
CM Sarma also announced that Zubeen Garg’s funeral will be conducted with full state honors on September 23 at Kamarcuti NC village near Guwahati. The decision came after discussions with the singer’s family, who expressed their preference for the location, considering the health of Garg’s elderly father.
Although people from Jorhat, where Garg spent his early years, requested that the funeral take place there, the Assam government decided to prioritize the family’s wish. CM Sarma assured that Zubeen’s ashes will be immersed in Jorhat, and a memorial will be established in his honor.
State Mourning Extended
Earlier, the Assam government had declared a three-day state mourning until September 22. With the funeral now scheduled for September 23, the mourning period has been extended by one more day.
The Singapore authorities have also issued an official death certificate confirming drowning as the cause of death. CM Sarma stated that the Indian High Commission in Singapore has been requested to share the full autopsy report at the earliest.
