A political rally in Karur turned into tragedy after a stampede claimed 38 lives, including women and children. Tamil superstar-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay expressed his deep sorrow on social media, while veteran actors Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan also shared heartfelt condolences.
Vijay’s Emotional Statement
In his X (formerly Twitter) post, Vijay wrote:
“My heart is deeply pained. I am writhing in unbearable grief that words cannot describe. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of my beloved brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the speedy recovery of those undergoing treatment in hospitals.”
The tragic incident occurred during Vijay’s rally where thousands had gathered to catch a glimpse of the actor-turned-politician.
How the Stampede Happened
Officials reported that the chaos began when enthusiastic supporters climbed a tree to get a better view of Vijay. The branches broke, and people fell onto the crowd below, sparking panic. In the ensuing rush, several were trampled as the crowd tried to escape.
The disaster claimed 38 lives, including 16 women and 8 children, while more than 150 were hospitalized. The Tamil Nadu government announced an ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh for each victim’s family.
Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan Condole Loss
Reacting to the incident, Rajinikanth wrote:
“The loss of innocent lives in Karur is extremely painful and tragic. I express my condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan said:
“The reports from Karur are shocking and heartbreaking. Words cannot express the sorrow over the innocent lives lost. I urge the Tamil Nadu government to ensure proper medical facilities and adequate relief reach the survivors and affected families.”
