South Indian film star and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party chief Vijay is embroiled in controversy after a video of his security personnel violently manhandling an attendee at a political rally went viral, leading to the registration of a police case.
The incident occurred during a rally in Madurai, a key event ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. While Vijay was met with a large and enthusiastic crowd, the event took a disturbing turn.
The Violent Confrontation
Video footage from the event shows Vijay walking along a ramp flanked by his security team. A man, identified as Sarath Kumar, is seen attempting to approach the actor. In a swift and aggressive move, one of Vijay’s bouncers is seen lifting Kumar and throwing him off the approximately seven-foot-high stage.
The clip, which has spread rapidly across social media platforms, shows the victim grabbing onto a pipe to break his fall, preventing more serious injury. The act has been widely condemned by fans and social media users alike, sparking outrage over the use of excessive force.
Legal Repercussions Follow Public Outrage
Following the incident, Sarath Kumar filed a formal complaint with the Perambalur police station. He alleged that he was merely trying to get a closer look at the actor and was assaulted without provocation.
Acting on the complaint, police have registered an FIR against Vijay and his security personnel under sections 189(2), 296(B), and 115(I) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (India’s new penal code), pertaining to assault and related charges.
The controversy presents a significant public relations challenge for Vijay, who has built a mass following as a popular actor and is now seeking a serious political foothold. The incident raises questions about security protocols and the treatment of supporters at public events.
