At the closing ceremony of IFFI 2025 in Goa on Friday, 28 November, Ranveer Singh and Rishab Shetty grabbed massive attention with their energetic presence. Ranveer, who praised Shetty’s performance in Kantara Chapter 1, recreated the film’s iconic climax scene live on stage—something that initially amused the audience.

However, a few seconds later, a comment he made during the act sparked a major controversy online.

The Statement That Triggered Backlash

While appreciating Shetty’s role, Ranveer said,

“I watched Kantara Chapter 1 in theatres and your performance was incredible. Especially the scene when the ‘ghost’ (Chamundi Devi) enters you… that moment was outstanding.”

He then mimicked the sequence, making Rishab Shetty laugh. Ranveer also joked with the audience:

“Should I be in Kantara 3? If yes, please send this message to Rishab.”

But the word “ghost” used for Chamundi Devi immediately drew criticism.

Fans Slam Ranveer for ‘Disrespecting’ the Deity

The video quickly spread across social media, with users expressing strong disappointment. Many called the remark “insensitive” and “disrespectful”.

A few reactions from netizens:

  • “When will actors learn what to say? Calling our Devi a ghost is unacceptable.”
  • “Ranveer should be careful with his words. This was offensive.”
  • “Chamundi Devi is divine, not a ghost. This is disrespectful.”

Kantara Chapter 1 – A Look Back

Kantara Chapter 1, directed by Rishab Shetty, is a prequel to the 2022 blockbuster Kantara. The film explores the roots of ancient traditions and the origins of the conflicts hinted at in the first movie.
