Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has strongly condemned the National Award jury’s decision to honour the film The Kerala Story. The film, starring Adah Sharma and directed by Sudipto Sen, has bagged National Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Direction, but not without stirring political controversy once again.
‘Clear Attempt to Sow Communal Hatred,’ Says Kerala CM
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), CM Vijayan expressed his disapproval over the decision. He alleged that the film spreads “blatant misinformation” with the intent of “tarnishing Kerala’s image” and accused the jury of legitimizing the divisive ideology of the Sangh Parivar.
“By honouring a film that spreads blatant misinformation with the clear intent of tarnishing Kerala’s image and sowing seeds of communal hatred, the jury of the #NationalFilmAwards has lent legitimacy to a narrative rooted in the divisive ideology of the Sangh Parivar,” Vijayan tweeted.
Vijayan Appeals to Citizens to Speak Out
The Kerala CM further urged people—especially those who believe in democracy and constitutional values—to raise their voices against this decision. He emphasized Kerala’s legacy as a land of harmony and resistance to communal forces.
“Kerala has always symbolized harmony and resistance against communal forces. This award decision is an insult to that spirit. All democratic citizens should raise their voice in defense of truth and our constitutional values,” he added.
A Controversial Film from the Start
The Kerala Story, released in 2023, has been surrounded by controversy since its announcement. The movie tells the story of young women from Kerala who are allegedly converted to Islam and recruited into the Islamic State (ISIS).
Upon its release, the film faced criticism from political leaders, civil rights groups, and citizens, who accused it of exaggeration and communal bias. Despite this, it gained significant box-office success and was even backed by several right-wing political leaders.
Now, with its recognition at the prestigious 71st National Film Awards, the debate surrounding its messaging and impact has resurfaced.
