In a shocking case from China’s Shaanxi province, a woman identified by her alias Chen Hong found a bizarre way to evade her five-year prison sentence for fraud. Between 2020 and 2024, she became pregnant three times, using China’s legal provision that allows pregnant women and new mothers to serve their sentence outside prison.
Her strategy worked for nearly four years, but it has now collapsed. Authorities discovered irregularities during a routine check in May 2025 and transferred her to a detention center to serve the remainder of her sentence.
How She Exploited the Law
Chen Hong was sentenced in December 2020 for fraud. Instead of going behind bars, she used a clause in Chinese law that permits postponement of imprisonment for pregnant women or mothers caring for newborns.
Each time she gave birth, she secured an extension of her release. However, officials later found that her third child was not living with her and was registered under her ex-husband’s sister’s name, raising suspicions of manipulation.
Investigation and Sentencing
Investigations revealed Chen had divorced her husband and handed over her first two children to him, while the third was placed with his sister. Legal experts accused her of misusing pregnancy to escape punishment.
Finally, she was ordered to complete her remaining one-year sentence in custody. Authorities stressed that such loophole exploitation will not be tolerated.

The case has sparked a heated debate online in China. Many netizens expressed anger over how children were used as “tools” to avoid jail.

Not the First Case in China
This is not an isolated incident. In 2005, another Chinese woman convicted of corruption claimed pregnancy 14 times in 10 years to escape life imprisonment. She was eventually jailed in 2015 after her repeated deception came to light.
