Renowned filmmaker Anuparna Roy has scripted history at the Venice Film Festival 2025 by winning the Best Director Award for her debut feature film Songs of Forgotten Trees. This achievement marks a proud moment for Indian cinema at one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals.
The Film That Won Global Recognition
The award was presented by French filmmaker and Orizzonti jury president Julia Ducournau. Interestingly, the project also has a strong association with noted director Anurag Kashyap.
Songs of Forgotten Trees is the first Indian film to be featured in the Orizzonti section of Venice. The film focuses on the lives of migrant women, exploring themes of loneliness and struggle, giving a voice to stories often left untold.
Anuparna Roy’s Cinematic Journey
Before this groundbreaking win, Anuparna was recognized for her 2023 film Run to the River. However, it was her debut feature, Songs of Forgotten Trees, that cemented her place in global cinema. Winning such a prestigious award with her first feature is considered a historic milestone for Indian filmmakers.
The Cast of ‘Songs of Forgotten Trees’
The film stars Naj Sheikh and Sumi Baghel in lead roles, along with Bhushan Shimpi, Ravi Maan, and Pritam Pilania in key performances.
During the award ceremony, Anuparna appeared emotional, dressed in an elegant white saree. While receiving the honor, she expressed gratitude to the jury, her cast, and Anurag Kashyap, calling the win “a dream come true.”
