Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday unveiled a roadmap for the future of the Indian Army, highlighting how indigenously developed technologies will transform its combat strength. Speaking at the inauguration of Rafe Mfiber Pvt Ltd’s Defence Equipment and Engine Testing Centre in Noida, Singh said the next 10 years will witness India’s armed forces becoming more powerful with made-in-India jet engines and the Sudarshan Chakra air defence system.

Drones to Play a Key Role in Modern Warfare

The Defence Minister emphasized the growing importance of drones in modern battlefields. “When we hear the word aircraft, we often think of Tejas, Rafale, or fighter jets. But today, drones have emerged as a decisive force, capable of reaching areas where large equipment cannot,” Singh said.

He referred to the Russia-Ukraine war as a clear example of large-scale drone deployment, stressing that India must integrate drone technology into its military strategies.

Historical Shift in Drone Use

Tracing the evolution of drones, Singh said they were initially used only for surveillance. Over time, several nations developed combat drones, which are now actively deployed in border conflicts. Countries that invested early in drone technology, he added, have gained a strategic edge, while others are lagging behind.

“In my experience of over six years as Defence Minister, I can confidently say the future of defence relies heavily on aircraft technology and drones,” Singh stated.

India’s Self-Reliance in Defence Production

The Defence Minister expressed pride in India’s progress in defence manufacturing. “Earlier, we had to import drones. Today, we design, develop, and manufacture them domestically. Many Indian entrepreneurs are contributing to this growth, and their efforts deserve immense appreciation,” Singh said.

He called the inauguration of the Noida testing centre a “powerful reflection of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in the defence sector.” Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was also present at the event.
