Aamir Khan’s 2006 film Rang De Basanti remains a cinematic masterpiece, but its success story wasn’t always guaranteed. Actress Soha Ali Khan has now revealed that the film’s cast returned part of their fees to the makers, who were uncertain about its box office future.
Producers Were Unsure About the Film’s Success
Soha Ali Khan, recalling the film’s shooting days, said, “Nobody expected the film to earn so much or touch people’s hearts the way it did. During promotions, the producers even called us and asked if we could return some of the money we had been paid, as they weren’t sure the film would work. We all returned our fees. At that time, we thought maybe they were right. But eventually, the film turned into a movement.”
Shooting Across India Took a Year
Talking about her experience, Soha revealed, “For me, Rang De Basanti was a turning point, something that will always remain a part of my journey. We shot for nearly a year across India—Punjab, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Mumbai. The entire cast and crew became very close. We often had to wait for hours on set, as our cinematographer Binod Pradhan took extra time to capture the perfect shot.”
Friendships That Faded With Time
Soha shared that the cast spent a lot of time together during the filming, which strengthened their bond. “We thought we would remain friends for life. But now it feels like it’s been ages since we last spoke to each other.”
On the work front, Soha Ali Khan was last seen in Chhori 2 alongside Nushrratt Bharuccha, where her role was appreciated by the audience.
